With a transfer in 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio and 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 Surround, this Special Edition DVD is crammed full of great extras including a filmmaker's commentary which is a thorough insight into the way they approached each scene, cut corners and experimented with unique ideas.
There are the standard extras, such as the trailer and cast/crew filmographies, giving a list of what everyone has worked on to date, which, as expected from performers new to the screen, is somewhat limited.
The Select-A-Song edition is a fantastic Karaoke-style sing along to all the numbers in the movie, which on its own is a nice little treat. There is also DVD-ROM content which supplies extra information through your PC.
The deleted scenes are very good and, apart from the obvious fact of adding to the running time, there is one in particular which should have been left in. It develops Miriam Shor's character and gives the audience more insight into him/her.
The most impressive extra is the documentary, an in-depth look at the origin of Hedwig from stage to screen. Mitchell gives a guided tour of some of the small theatres, which inspired the story. There are also interviews with him, Trask, Shor and others who were involved with the original stage version and the film.
Mitchell's life story is an interesting part of the documentary - growing up in countries, such as Germany, due to his father being a US general. Any of this sound familiar? Also, there are interviews with his parents, as well as the stage director, which adds to Hedwig's development and journey.
