The fortnight-long London Film Festival 1999 ended on 18th November, with two British film directors making the final bows. The last film of the the festival was the UK gala of the excellent American Beauty.

US-based British director, Sam Mendes, back in the UK for the first time in 18 years, came on stage to introduce the film, along with stars of the film Kevin Spacey and 17-year-old Thora Birch. "This is a particularly exciting and emotional moment for me," said Mendes.

Lynne Ramsay - director of RatcatcherThere were laurels too for Ratcatcher. Scottish film director Lynne Ramsay was awarded the Sutherland Trophy Prize, for the most original and imaginative first feature film. Ratcatcher earned a maximum five stars from Inside Out Film when The Wolf reviewed it at the World Premiere in August.

Runners-up were Fucking Amål (Show Me Love), directed by Lukas Moodysson and The Virgin Suicides, directed by Sophia Coppola.

The FIPRESCI International Critics' Award went to director Kimberly Pierce for Boys Don't Cry.

Film festival director Adrian Wootton had reason to be encouraged. The LFF announced that box office takings were up 11% on last year and over 120,000 flocked to the Festival's screenings.

Some of the stars to see at the 159 films were Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Spike Lee, Mike Leigh, Jim Jarmusch, Ang Lee, Ralph Fiennes, Tobey Maguire and Matthew McConaughy.
