The Festival International du Film in Cannes first made
its appearance in 1946 and since then has has grown into
one of the primary international film forums boasting
a major star quotient and high percentage of world premieres.
Although the highlight of the Festival is the award of
the prestigious Palme d'Or, the Cannes organisers are
keen to point out that the fortnight on the French Riviera
represents much more than a protracted awards ceremony.
