Henry's Cat purruses the latest collection of the best and brightest new promo videos. Directors StyleWar, Tony Kaye, Bryan Barber, Sophie Muller, Dawn Shadforth, John McLean, Jarvis Cocker/Martin Wallace, Roman Coppola, Tommy Pallotta, Howard Shur, Shynola, Adam Berg, Wong Kar-wai, Jeff Thomas. I reach the cinema, full of gusto and hope, practically gagging for another fine set of music promos and short cinema (see my report on Mirrorball New Work). Excitement and expectation built up, I sit down, a cup of coffee in one hand, biro in the other and wait for these brilliant films to start. Eighty minutes later, I am still waiting. Unlike the other collections in the Mirrorball program, this is almost entirely without merit. The only video that seems worthwhile is Wong Kar-wei's for DJ Shadow's Six Days, a short story of love, rejection and tattoos. The rest is passable, although most fail to engage the audience, not giving enough imagination to onscreen events. Even Shynola's offering doesn't seem interesting. This could be due to the selection of musical artists, which include Pulp, Radiohead, The Beta Band and The Strokes. Big names have a kind of dogma, requiring a certain amount of face-time, driving the video in less interesting directions. The other possibility is that the best were put into New Work 1 and Mirrorball McClaren Animation instead, which begs the question, why bother making another program? I cannot find any positive reasons to go and see this show. Unless you like your music videos bland and derivative, avoid at all costs. |
