The Document section (formerly Imagining Reality) brings exceptional non-fiction films from all over the world. Baadasssss Cinema, a blaxploitation documentary by British director and artist Isaac Julien; Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary is an extraordinary meeting with Traudl Junge, recalling her years of service as private secretary to Adolf Hilter; Fellini: I'm A Big Liar is a study of the Italian maestro by Scottish director Damian Pettigrew; Sophie Fiennes' Hoover Secret Revival examines the gospel music and preachers of Los Angeles; Marlene Dietrich - Her Own Song looks at Dietrich's life and work during World War 2, and is directed by her grandson J David Riva; and Sex With Strangers is an eye-opening and hilarious look at the world of swingers in the USA.
LATE NIGHT ROMPS
Billed as the "fast", "raunchy" section of the festival
this features some of horror and cult movies from: Hideo Nakata, director
of the acclaimed Ring Trilogy with supernatural chiller
Dark Water; My Little Eye, directed
by UK filmmaker Marc Evans, takes the Big Brother phenomenon and throws
a serial killer into the mix; Tattoo Germany's
Robert Schwenkte delivers a gruesome police thriller in the vain of
Se7en; Bundy
is a biopic of one of America's most notorious serial killers; and The
Happiness of the Katakuris is a brain-melting horror/comedy/musical
from outrageous Japanese director Miike Takashi.
REEL LIFE
The popular Reel Life strand returns with a series of live
interviews with filmmakers. Anne Coates, the award-winning
British editor of countless greats including Lawrence of Arabia,
The Elephant Man, Out of Sight and
Erin Brockovich. DJ and musician film scorer David
Holmes discusses his role in the making of films such as Ocean's
Eleven and Out Of Sight.
Christopher Nolan, director of Memento and Closing
Night Film Insomnia, discusses his work. And Bollywood
star Shah Ruhk Khan will discuss his phenomenal career
to date.
The festival also features extensive promos and commercials in its Mirrorball
section including a seven hour trip through the video vaults in Video
Jukebox: The History of the Music Video, 1924 to 1984). Short filmmakers
get a start in the festival's showcase of short films and animation
from around the world. Full details of these programmes will be announced
in the lead-up to August.
This years retrospective strand of films focuses on the work of Kon Ichikawa, one of the grand masters of Japanese cinema.
