Young Adam has won the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film. A dark Scottish thriller, it stars Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton and Peter Mullan and was the second feature from director David Mackenzie. 16 Years Of Alcohol, directed by ex-Skids frontman Richard Jobson, was given a special commendation by the jury.

The Standard Life Audience Award, voted for by audiences at the EIFF went to Alison Peebles's debut feature Afterlife, which stars Kevin McKidd as an ambitious journalist who finds he must care for his sister with Downs Syndrome.

The following is the list of 10 films with the most votes from EIFF audiences:

1. Afterlife (A New Found Film)

2. Wondrous Oblivion

3. In America

4. Wilbur (Wants to Kill Himself)

5. Solid Air

6. 16 Years of Alcohol

7. Comandante

8. Eroica

9. Laurel Canyon

10. Swimming Pool

The Standard Life Audience Award winner is chosen by audience votes from the Gala and British Gala sections. This was the first Festival Award to be chosen solely by audience vote and celebrates mainstream cinema delights: narrative skill, characterisation, suspense, spectacle, comedy, etc.

Previous winners have included The Full Monty, Billy Elliot and Amelie, and last year Rabbit-Proof Fence.
