The 2004 Edinburgh International Film Festival awards were announced last night. The list of awards follows:

The Standard Life Audience Award

Chosen by audience votes from the Gala and British Gala sections.

The Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film

Rewarding imagination and creativity in British filmmaking, the Award carries a substantial cash prize, and is judged by an international jury: Nik Powell (Producer/Director of NFTS), Catherine McCormack (Actor), Sylvia Chang (Actor/Director), John Gray (Author/Philosopher), and Jonathan Sehring (President of IFC Entertainment). 2004 WINNER presented by Actor Catherine McCormack, EIFF Jury Member :

Pawel Pawlikowski won the Michael Powell Award in 2000 with The Last Resort

The Guardian New Director's Award, acknowledging new interpretation and innovation in filmmaking. Presented by filmmaker Stephen Frears.

Super Size Me directed by Morgan Spurlock

Saltire Society Grierson Award for Short Documentary

For first and second time short documentary filmmakers working in or from Scotland. Supported by a donation from Baillie Gifford. Presented by Lord Sutherland of the Saltire Society

And So Goodbye directed by Jim Hickey

Special Commendation: Taking Cuttings directed by Ewan McNicol

The Kodak and UK Film Council Award for Best British Short Film

Determined by an international jury, and including a cash prize, the Best British Short Film Award is this year supported by Kodak and the UK Film Council. This award recognises new talent in UK filmmaking. 2004 Joint winners presented by Director of Photography Seamus McGarvey:

The McLaren Animation Award for New British Animation

Named after Stirling-born Norman McLaren (who trained at the Glasgow School of Art), this award provides a focus for new British animation and recognises the free spirit of creativity. Joint winners presented by filmmaker Stephen Frears:
