Almost
Famous
Almost in danger of suffering from over-hype the LFF opening film is nonetheless
a sweet and entertaining coming-of-age story set around the rock scene of the
early Seventies. A semi-autobiographical piece, this is the first feature from
director Cameron Crowe since Jerry Macguire.

Shadow
of the Vampire
This entertaining black comedy about the making of the first vampire movie, 1922
silent horror classic Nosferatu, blends fact with fiction to great effect. An
unrecognisable Willem Dafoe is spooky and mesmerising as the lead actor who plays
Count Orlof, Max Schreck.

Requiem
For A Dream
Indie darling writer-director Darren Aronofsky's expressionistic fable about drug
addiction is a worthy follow-up to his critically acclaimed Pi.
Aronofsky dabbles with all manner of lenses and camera effects to create some
mind-bending visuals. Class A cinematography.

Divided
We Fall (Musíme si pomáhat)
A married couple, living in a small village in German-occupied Czechslovakia,
give refuge to a concentration camp escapee leading to a series of close encounters
with local nazi officials, one of whom is an old associate. The theme may sound
grim yet this multi-layered comedy drama is both entertaining and intelligent.

The
Diplomat
Celebrated Australian documentary maker Tom Zubrycki's intimate fly-on-wall portrait
of East Timorese independence leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jose Ramos
Horta offers an affecting insight into the machinations of the international community
over the embattled Asian state. Horta, who was ambassador in exile for almost
two and a half decades is a colourful, outspoken and often reluctant politician
who is seen meeting with UN leaders, the US president and even phoning the pope
for support as a string of crises unravel in war-torn East Timor.

Small
Time Crooks
Woody Allen's latest is a loose-structured, light comedy that follows the antics
of a gang of crooks who are crap when it comes to robbing banks but find a lucrative
sideline selling biscuits, er, cookies. Woody stars as the protoganist jibing
with Tracey Ullman, while Hugh Grant shows up later in the film.

Louis
Prima: the Wildest
Veteran documentary maker Don McGlynn has ransacked the concert archives to bring
this entertaining portrait of one of the jazz greats. Virtually forgotten now,
this jazz tenor/trumpet player/band leader was one of the most exuberant showmen
around and big star in the Forties and Fifties. Definitely one for jazz fans,
lounge lizards and their kin.

Last
Resort
An engaging small film about a young Russian woman who comes to UK with her boy
looking to meet up with her English lover, but is thrown in a refugeee camp. Director
Paul Pawlikowski's grainy vision of modern Britain within the compound perimetres
has a bleak beauty while the main characters provide a positive focus. The film
is touching without falling into sentimentality.

Broken
Hearts Club
Causing a bit of a sensation on account of the fact that here is a feature about
gay guys in the lead roles being open about their sex lives in a script that doesn't
default to character types. And it is quite entertaining too.
