FESTIVALS : WILD JAPAN

iofilm reviews the Wild Japan film festival, which is touring the UK from Spring 2005.

classic Japan - Sword of Doom

Background

The Sixties and Seventies were a fruitful period in Japanese filmmaking, with the younger generation of writer/directors rebelling against social conventions and cinematic sensibilities. They had a subversive edge and the result was excessive cult films, many of which were never shown in the west, although they became powerful influences on those who came later, directors such as John Woo, who made a name for themselves in Hollywood. If it weren’t for these films, would Quentin Tarantino have made Kill Bill? This is a unique opportunity to discover the birth of Japanese Extreme.
