Crash Wins at Oscars 2006

By Robert Alstead - Posted on 06 March 2006

Crash pipped Brokeback Mountain for the best film award at the Oscar ceremony, held last night at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The bookies knew something was up when they narrowed the odds (from 8/1 to 6/4) yesterday on Crash winning that category in the run-up to the ceremony. Brokeback Mountain was ahead at 1/2. Ang Lee had the consolation of taking Best Director, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay Award, and Best Score.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) were popular winners in the Best Acting categories, with George Clooney (Syriana) and Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) winning the awards for supporting roles. It was a night where Hollywood glam was tinged with political barbs from Daily Show comic Jon Stewart who hosted the night's proceedings. Clooney and Weisz also took a political line, albeit more earnest, recognising the importance of activism in the current political climate in their acceptance speeches.

The heavily-pregnant Weisz wasn't the only Brit to turn her nomination into success: there was joy for Bristol-based Aardman animation when Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit was announced as the winner of the Animated Feature category. Nick Park and Steve Box, the creators of Wallace and Gromit, were dressed in matching oversized bow ties. They accepted their little gold statuettes by adorning them with miniature, matching stripey ties.

Populist documentary March of the Penguins won the non-fiction gong and South African drama Tsotsi, an Edinburgh Film Festival favourite, won in the foreign film category.
