ADAPTED from an Arthus Schnitzler play (La Ronde, Eyes Wide Shut), Ophul's "first masterpiece" is set in his favourite 19th century Vienna where a young girl, Christine, falls in love with a soldier who later dies in a duel over another woman. Alone Christina must then decide if the object of her affection ever truly loved her. Typically this is emotive and operatic in style with the standard Ophulsion focus on image over content.
