2.5/5 Barbershop 2: Back In Business

Back In Business is a sequel to the hair-raising comedy hit, Barbershop. Lovers of the original will be pleased to know that Calvin still has a shop on Chicago's South Side, populated by many of his snip-clipping colleagues from the first film.

The story is fairly simple, since it's largely about commercial rivalries and nasty big business corporate development vs local community interests.

Calvin (Ice Cube) is strapped moneywise and none too pleased when a high-tech haircutting franchise prepares to open across the street. The new barbers, Nippy Cutz, is part of a nationwide chain of shops and comes with many new features - fish tanks, plush surroundings, attractive accessories. This proves to be symptomatic of what is happening elsewhere, as small shopkeepers sell out to national conglomorates and the neighbourhood gradually loses its community spirit and identity - at least, that's what the locals are afraid of.

Calvin prepares to do battle, even if it makes no financial sense and means open warfare with Nippy Cutz.

Barbershop 2 doesn't stretch itself too far, offering one slant on the development debate - no mention of how the influx of new money can improve an area, of course - and being neither heavily intellectual, subtle nor profound, you're left with an inoffensive comedy, sure to get support from fans of the original.
