Fantastic Four DVD review

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first introduced the Fantastic Four to the worldwide audience as a comic book in November 1961. In 1967, the first animated series was released. Two others soon followed in 1978 and 1994. Although the time goes by, the main characters remain the same - Mister Fantastic, Invisible Women, The Human Torch and The Thing.

Fantastic Four, directed by Tim Story, was one of the most awaited movies of the season. How does it meet audience demands?

It is the story of a group of astronauts to whom, while being in space, a DNA change has occurred. Each of them returns back to earth with a new ability suitable for superheroes - Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd) can stretch his body; Invisible Women, (Jessica Alba) apart from being invisible, is able to create force fields; The Human Torch (Chris Evans) is surrounded by flames and can fly, while The Thing (Michale Chiklis) is made of rocky-looking material and possesses great strength.

However, the plot is only supported by the supernatural powers of the Fantastic Four and evil Doctor Doom (Julian McMahon). It's all about love between Susan Storm (Invisible Woman) and Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic), who once were together and now meet again. Despite the relationship with Dr Doom, Susan is not indifferent to Reed and vice versa.

No doubt, the film has its potential. It's an emotional love story, based on a very classical comic book. However, the question about meeting the demands of modern audiences remains. In my opinion, this movie is one of the worst of its kind. The actors are barely acceptable, due to creating neither good, nor bad roles, leaving no lasting impression. All in all, they are nothing more than average.

The brightest element is probably the special effects, which are quite astonishing and unique in places. However, some might disagree, comparing them to (for example) Spider-Man 2.

Whatever your expectations, the result does not meet them. For sure, the plot is interesting and one can easily follow it, but even beautiful Jessica Alba, who had a perfect start in the genre in the remarkable Sin City, won't change the impression of nothing new when it comes to filming comic books.
