The Freediver DVD review

After Luc Besson's The Big Blue, this is certainly the biggest and probably second best film about freediving. Shot on the island of Spetses and inspired by the life of Danai Varveri, Greek World Champion in depth diving from 1999, writer/director Alki David's film takes us again to the world of dolphins, into the splendours big blue.

The plot is quite simple. We follow Danai (Camilla Rutherford) on her way to breaking the world record, encouraged by Hector (played by David), her demanding coach. Against all odds, she fights against her body, health, Aida Organisation, love and passion.

Although The Freediver is well made, its plot seems too obvious in places. What is more, the whole idea is almost identical to The Big Blue. The main characters are too similar. We meet a spirited diver (Danai in The Freediver, Enzo Molinari and Jacques Mayol in The Big Blue). They are supported by famous doctors Dr. Laurence and Dr. Viades.

However, The Freediver can defend itself with some magnificent underwater photography. Alekos Yiannaros invites us on a breathtaking journey deep into the blue, magic sea. He shows us magnificent underwater views, which may explain why so many people die in the water breaking world records, just to experience the ocean depth, this place where there is no sunlight, the true world of dolphins.

The Freediver is not going to be such a phenomenon as The Big Blue, but it surely has its impact. With good performances from Rutherford, David and James Fox, it remains beautiful and well directed.
