UK sci-fi fans wont want to miss this often hilarious spoof of Star Trek and its ilk. In a confusion of identities a group of nice, but socially awkward aliens land on Planet Earth at a convention for fans of long-running sci-fi television series Galaxy Quest. The aliens, having intercepted the programme's signal, believe the television stars are for real and are counting on them to save their civilisation from a terrible galactic enemy. The cast naturally fob off these geeky-looking people as groupies, although the truth gradually emerges with amusing results.

The best of the comedy is in its observations on sci-fidom - the obsessiveness of sci-fi fans and the behind-the-scenes conflicts of actorly egos - Alan Rickman is particularly good as the lugubrious Dr Lazarus, always overshadowed by the limelight-hogging lieutenant, played by Tim Allen (the voice of Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear and television series, Home Improvement). Sci-fi stalwart, Sigourney Weaver, puts aside her tough alien-blasting personna, (her hair dyed blonde for her role as the babe interest in the television series) showing in the process that she can do comedy as well as action. Lots of fun.
