Hot Rod is one of those madcap and profoundly stupid comedies that is instantly forgettable but entertaining enough to keep a smile on your face for two hours. Saturday Night Live regular Andy Samberg plays Rod Kimble a self-made stuntman in the style of Evel Knievel, the only problem is that he's more Frank Spencer than Evel, and you really do worry for him whenever he does a stunt.

Rod lives at home with Mom (Spacek), stepbrother Kevin (Jorma Taccone) and father Frank (McShane). What Rod really wants is for his stepfather Frank to be proud of him, but the truth is that Frank thinks Rod is a complete dork and since Frank dishes out a sound daily beating on Rod in the basement in playfights, you can see he's not wrong. Rod really is a loser.

Rod has loser friends too. Dave, a mechanic, Rico a ramp builder for the stunts, Kevin - a nerdy team manager and neighbour Denise who joins the group. Even though Denise has a boyfriend, she quite fancies Rod.

When Frank suffers a major heart problem, the family are up against it, needing $50,000 to pay for an operation. Rod who idolises his stepfather will stop at nothing and risk every part of his body to raise enough money to pay off the medics and get his father that new heart.

That's as sophisticated as it gets. For much of it, it's barnstormingly crazy with Rod setting light to himself, nearly drowning, memorably falling down a hillside in one hilariously zany sequence, colliding with ramps, and driving motorbikes into swimming pools. When Rod takes on the challenge of doing one massive jump on a motorbike over 15 buses, you know this is going to be one helter-skelter ride for the unfortunate Rod. Its mad, insanely stupid and the kind of Friday night film that's perfectly suited for oceans of beer and a tub of popcorn.
