SO let's get this clear. Lying is bad, but when you lie to try to make other people happy it's ok. When you lie for money you hurt people and eventually you'll get what's coming to you. By reading those last two sentences you have saved yourself a very dull hour and a half of the latest British comedy.
Janice Beard (Eileen Walsh) is a dreamer who goes to London to make money so that her mother can have treatment for agoraphobia. She gets a job with a car company who have a new vehicle launch coming up. She falls for Sean (Rhys Ifans) the mailboy, who is not what he seems. She gets into trouble but it all works out in the end. And that's about it really.
Newcomer Walsh is endearing enough as Beard but that's not really enough to carry the movie. Patsy Kensit is excellent as the insecure head of the secretaries and Ifans does well in a terrible part. He can look forward to better, post-Notting Hill.
The best gag is in the opening 10 seconds. I suggest you amuse yourself for the rest of the movie by picking at the holes in the plot. Scenes with opening lines such as "Thank you for agreeing to come in and work today, Janice" to explain why a character is in a certain situation belong in pantomime.
This whole movie comes across as a nice idea badly developed. Don't be surprised if there's a sitcom spin-off. And yes, Patsy Kensit and excellent in the same sentence. Who'd have thought we'd all live so long?
