A musical interpretation of the Passion of Joan of Arc, set in the present-day cavern-like environment of a dark hospital, Johanna is an unusual film that won't be to everyone's taste but it may be inspiring to those into films like Metropolis or Carl Dreyer's Jeanne D'Arc. Set to music, this is about a young girl who reforms, becomes a nurse and is all-giving to her patients (even to the point of giving out sexual favours). Essentially, Johanna's sense of selflessness will become her undoing since it brings out the badness in others.

This is a challenging portrayal of a young woman, staying faithfully to the story of Joan of Arc but also ambitiously set by Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo within the genre of Opera. As a modern opera interpretation, its strongest points are in the choral arrangements and the performance of Orsi Toth memorable as the aforementioned Johanna.
