NOT actually about very much, this black and white cinematic caper comes across as a charming, whimsical and often hilarious experience, linking itself continuously to former styles of cinema in light-hearted tribute. Buzby Berkeley extravaganzas, film noir, Sixties nouvelle vague, this film has them all.
Julie (Babett Knudsen) has broken up with Rene, and is having trouble adjusting. A marvellous performance showing the obsessive behaviour that women in such a situation are capable of (she won Best Actress from the Danish Film Academy) is enhanced by the dramatic lighting and retro camerawork. The other characters give ample support; no-good layabouts and petty thieves, they are for the most part eminently likeable.
Mogens, a typical gentle giant who has been sleeping on Julie's couch for two and a half years, draws the line at Paper Moon style cons; Thomas, dreaming of being a writer, lives out his own novel in his head; Steffen, obsessed with football, and one Danish footballer in particular, manages to seize a piece of his own dream.
