Little Black Book stars Brittany Murphy as Stacy, a distrustful and slightly insecure TV producer, who is worried her boyfriend Derek (Ron Henderson) isn't being entirely straight with her. When he heads off on a trip, he accidentally/conveniently forgets his Palm Pilot and calls Stacy to get some numbers from it. Having found them and more importantly discovered the Pilot, she is tempted and persuaded by co-worker Barb (Holly Hunter) to look more closely into its secrets, finding it contains telephone numbers of his old flames. It isn't long before she has conjured up a plan, using her TV show as subterfuge, to persuade these ladies to talk about their lives, with a special emphasis on their relationships with Derek.
LBB, as it is known in the girls' locker room, doesn't stand up to that much scrutiny, assuming you actually want to see a movie about a slightly unbalanced girl going to absurd lengths to see if her boyfriend is squeaky clean. Whilst Murphy's performance is largely unmemorable, Hunter manages to make the most of the part of a conniving bitch and Kathy Bates is pretty good as a daytime chat show host.
The film seems to find a sense of equilibrium in the final third, but given the languid beginning, slightly contrived plot, it is no surprise that laugh-wise, it's a hit-and-miss affair.
Wait for the DVD would be my advice, but don't go expecting another Broadcast News - one of Hunter's better films, set in a TV news studio.
