With echoes of Ghost and Truly Madly Deeply, P.S. I Love You sees Hilary Swank playing a feminine role as loved-up girlie Holly who has to cope with the terminal illness of eccentric hubby Gerry (Gerard Butler) who dies early on of a brain tumour.
Gerry before his death has time to plan, in terms of helping Holly by arranging for her to receive letters, messages, tasks and presents from him as if he were still alive. Creepy or what?
Kathy Bates playing Holly's mother begins to feel this is weird and she's not the only one. It's one thing to leave the odd note, but Gerry's go on endlessly for months and months, and rely (rather unbelievably) on Holly always receiving them in the correct fashion and not getting irritated by his constant "I'm still here but don't worry, be happy" approach.
On the plus side, this chick-flick, American/Irish rom-com is funny in places thanks to a script, so some will enjoy it for what it is. Gradually through flashback, you get to see Holly in Ireland meeting Gerry for the first time, although this is a rather twee picture-postcard view of Ireland complete with Butler's rather dodgy accent. I guess though if you want to see a breezy hunk with patter for the ladies, then Gerard Butler wooing Hilary Swank might just float your boat.
Towards the end, the film picks up a bit (thankfully) and it's nice to see Hilary Swank in a more girlie role for a change following her role as a boxer with Clint Eastwood and a manly-like cowboy before that.
P.S. I Love You is a fairly cloying, uneven comedy that leaves you wanting to hear Holly say, "I loved you and I'm sorry, but P.S. can you please just bugger off now!" at least once, and that line if only it happened, might just have got the biggest laugh of the lot.
