Rain Man on a sports field.
The film is based on a true story and shows the growing friendship between a college American football coach (Ed Harris) and a slightly retarded man, Radio (Cuba Gooding Jr), who initially pushes a dilapidated shopping trolley, with fairly worthless objects, around a small South Carolina town. Often he passes the college football pitch, while training is going on, and listens harmlessly to his radio. One day, the coach starts up a conversation and from there, over a period of time, encourages him to help with training and come to matches. Some locals grow unhappy with Radio's influence on the team and begin to make waves in the community.
Cloying subject matter, which some might find too saccharine, manages to stay on the right side of sentimentality (just), largely because of decent and very genuine performances from Gooding and Harris, as well as fascinating footage of the real Radio in the final reel, which makes you realise that director Mike Tollin has largely got it right.
