Secret Window is a suspense thriller about a novelist Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp), who takes up residence in a countryside wood lodge to write his latest book, while going through a painful divorce. Suffering writer's block, he receives a visit one day from a mysterious stranger, called John Shooter (John Turturro), an imposing man in a hat, who claims that Mort stole his story in one of his earlier collections.
At first, Mort dismisses Shooter's accusation, seeking to prove beyond doubt that he published the story first in a magazine, but Shooter refuses to give up and begins to show that he will stop at nothing to get an admission of guilt.
The film is taken from a Stephen King novella and is enlivened by interesting performances from Depp and Turturro. It develops nicely, with plenty of scary moments and intriguing twists.
It's worth seeing if you're into tensely unhinged movies, or merely curious to see how King has been adapted. Writer/diretor David Koepp makes a good job of it, aided and abetted by his performers - Turturro exudes menace and makes good use of his weird black hat, while Depp is better than OK.
