Upcoming German director Detlev Buck has come up with a gritty and authentic rites of passage drama, reminiscent of La Haine. Set in modern Berlin, it features David Kross in his first lead role, as 15 year old Michael Polischka, a boy thrown into a rough ethnic neighbourhood, far from the wealthy suburbs where he grew up, after his mum broke up with a rich boyfriend. Shortly after moving, Michael is singled out for violent bullying and extortion by a gang at his school.

Life at home is topsy-turvy as Michael's attractive mum (Jenny Elvers-Elbertzhagen, Jailbirds, Knockin' on Heavens Door) has several suitors, but Michael's life seemingly takes a turn for the better when local heavy Hamal (Erhan Emre - Icarus), takes him on as his protégée, delivering drugs to local dealers. In return for playing delivery boy Michael receives protection from the gang who have been bullying him. However, while life becomes hunky-dory for Michael, the increasingly dangerous missions will test just how tough he is.

German actor and filmmaker Detlev Buck (Bundle of Joy, Jailbirds) will be pleased that Tough Enough has won accolades in Europe, including a Fipresci Award and a Europa Cinemas Labels Award. The soundtrack featuring the likes of Gang of Four and Beck, complements the mean urban world which Michael finds himself in after the comfort he was used to.

The film captures the daily struggles of inner city life, gang rivalry, organised crime, and struggle for survival, but Tough Enough nevertheless leaves a lasting impression of hope.

Buck has succeeded in bringing out decent naturalistic performances and created a commendable air of authenticity in Tough Enough.
