Winner of The Georges Delerue Prize at Flanders International Film Festival 2006, Walker is a weirdly, interesting bohemian romance directed by Tony Gatlif (Gadjo Dilo, Exiles,Vengo) and featuring unusual performances from Asia Argento (Marie Antoinette, Land of The Dead, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things ), Birol Ünel (Head On, King of Thieves) and Amira Casar (Sylvia, Anatomy of Hell).
Tony Gatlif's cinematic world is unique. In each of his films he paints a compelling portrait of a most particular universe with its own distinct codes, morals and conventions. For his latest work, Gatlif moves beyond his adopted France to Transylvania in the heart of Romania, as he tells a story of an
obsessive love and one woman's search for her lover.
At the heart of this film, is a memorable soundtrack and interesting performances from Argento and Unel. The beautiful and mysterious Zingarina (played by Asia Argento) finds herself in pursuit of the man she loves.
After beginning a relationship with a passionate Romanian musician in France he abandons her, leaving her confused and two months pregnant. Accompanied by her protective friend, Marie (Amira Casar), Zingarina throws herself into a quest to find her lover in Romania, venturing into the unknown in Transylvania. Roma life is rootless and unencumbered, but it also demands a certain kind of bravery.
This is a strange and unsettling place, but one full of compassion. 'Events may not always work out in the way that you expect' is perhaps the message from this film, as well as an underlying message of it's good to take risks and seize the moment especially when it comes to romance.
Zingarina is the first female protagonist in Gatlif's cinema and she opens new horizons in his work. Ultimately, this film hinges on Argento and Ünel's performances which are the highlights. As with his previous films, Tony Gatlif''s soundtrack to Transylvania is vibrant and infectious providing the emotional core of the movie.
