Guess what ? Its time for another thriller and Ashley Judd is playing another detective.
About the only surprise in this starry cast is that there's no place for Morgan Freeman. Judd plays detective Jessica Shepherd, feisty, sharp, quick-witted and successful. Her only problem is her private life. Many of the guys she picks up and sleeps with end up dead. Naturally, she's the prime suspect, but, of course, c'mon, she's feisty, sharp and good at her job.
Who else could be in the frame ? How about her new partner (Andy Garcia), or the Commissioner (Samuel L Jackson)? You know they have to be involved somehow. It's just a case of working out how and where.
This is fairly run-of-the-mill stuff, adding another twist to a cops-and-serial killer caper. At least, a film like Double Jeopardy had a fresh feel to it. Twisted seems jaded, relying on weaknesses in the plot to get across its storyline.
Quite how Philip Kaufman came to be at the helm of such a derivative thriller is anyone's guess. Perhaps, it's a case of paying the rent. It'll find an audience on the basis of the A-list cast, but it's a pity Kaufman couldn't insist on greater and more believable twists to the story.
