Offbeat slacker comedy Weirdsville comes from the director of cult movies like Pump up the volume and Empire Records. From a rat heading down a toilet-bowl, you get the story of two drug-hazed losers Dexter & Royce (Speedman, Bentley) who on a wintry night in Ontario, must find money to pay off a hoodlum dealer, bury their best friend Matilda who's died of an overdose, escape from a satanist trio and keep clear of a group of manic marauding dwarves dressed up as vikings. It's a film aptly titled.
Director Allan Moyle's black comedy tries to find humour in the freaky reactions of the budding leads to the unexpected. Our reluctant heroes luckily don't take life too seriously, which is also the best way to approach this film. It's well edited and the performances are reasonable, but it doesn't make you laugh as much as it might have hoped. It would have benefited from a sharper script and a less busy screenplay.
