"Essential Killing", a Jeremy Thomas presentation directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, has won an unprecedented three awards at last night's ceremony in Venice, taking home the Special Jury Prize, Best Actor (Vincent Gallo), and the Cinemavveniere Award for Best Film in Competition (youth jury).

Hannah McGill has decided to step down from her role as artistic director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival. McGill has been at the helm of the EIFF since 2006 and curated her first film festival in 2007. Prior to that she was a programme consultant for the festival for five years.

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, today announced the launch of the “Digital Revolutions” short film competition, with Sheffield Doc/Fest, the biggest documentary film festival in the UK and Crossover, an international digital media and content programme.

A collaboration between ICO (the Independent Cinema Office) and LUX has led to the commissioning of seven International artists to produce a series of short films which have been shown in Cannes in the past week alongside feature films like the thriller The Ghost and British satire Four Lions.

Sony is running a competition for budding 3D filmmakers (closing date: 9 July 2010). The winning entries will be used on its in-store demo Blu-ray disc and given to purchasers of its new line of Sony BRAVIA 3D TVs.

Adobe's new line of editing suites - CS5 - were launched with great fanfare on Monday. Among them is the video editing package, Production Premium CS5, which looks to build on the strengths of Adobe Production Premium CS4, as well as iron out some of its wrinkles.

Edinburgh-set animated feature The Illusionist is to open Edinburgh International Film Festival 2010 on 16th June. The opening gala will also be the inaugural EIFF premiere for the Edinburgh Festival theatre.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) will be rolling out the red carpet at the Festival Theatre for the first time this June. The theatre has secured £245,000 in funding from the Scottish Government to install new digital cinema facilities.

WWF-UK is calling on budding filmmakers to enter a competition and win £1000 cash by making a short video about Earth Hour, a global call for action against climate change.

The Hurt Locker was expected to fare well at the Oscars, but even the team behind the Afghanistan-set feature looked like they never dreamed of doing quite as well as this. In the end, they took six Oscars, including the big two - Best Picture and Best Director, for Kathryn Bigelow (as I predicted in my Oscars preview).
