THE American Dream is what you ask? One need only look to native Milwaukeean Mark Borchardt for the living embodiment. America's political soothsayers can rest assured, the dream is alive and well, manifesting true grotesque absurdities with rare form. The form: Drinkin, Dreamin, "makin' it happen man because no one's gonna do it for you", The moronic American mentality in a nutshell.

Director Chris Smith's documentary captures a slice of the U.S. of A as personified by Borchardt. The footage spans over a two year period capturing Mark's relationship with Beer, more Beer, Trailer parks, Football, Led Zeppelin, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Family portraits from Sears, Coca Cola, and most importantly "Dreams Man, Dreams". American culture, God bless it.

The location is Middle America, Milwaukee, to be exact. The true-to-life character is Mark an aspiring filmmaker whose works include Coven and well that's it. There is of course his dream project that's still in the making Northwestern, if he ever gets the money to finance it.

A lovely entourage of fully dysfunctional friends and family members accompany him on his mad capers, attempting to finnish the film he started when he was 12. Keep in mind he's now 30. The fact that these people truly exist is, well, frightening. And yet there is something redeeming, something simple and sweet about Mark and his wacky crew. You can't help but like them, their ignorant bliss, their comic absurdity, and yes, you do leave the film hoping that Mark Borchardt will make it big some day. What is it they say? Anything's possible...
