Are We There Yet? rating
1/5 Are We There Yet?

This is an African-American family film, in which Ice Cube plays a young man who falls in love with an estranged single mother, but in his bid to win her over, has to contend with her kids, who don't want any man to enjoy the attentions of their mother apart from their real father.

He tells us all about blingage, gets to ride a horse and has an absurd wisecracking baseball miniature that tiresomely comes to life every few minutes, yet mysteriously can only be seen by Ice Cube himself.

Are We There Yet? will find an audience, but probably only a small one, since it purports to being a comedy, but is really just plain silly, rather than funny. There are amazingly stupid road chases, involving truck and van drivers and naturally the kids take a disliking to the guy at first, but have a heart in the end.

There are better things on release, but if you're looking for an innocuous predictable family comedy, where you don't have to think at all, I guess this might (just) fit the bill.
