Battleship Potemkin is more than a classic, it is a landmark in the history of cinema. The famous Odessa Steps sequence, where a horrified mother watches her baby's pram bounce down the steps, has been a touchstone for filmmakers the world over. The sequence has been emulated or parodied endlessly.

The film is a propagandist depiction of the 1905 mutiny on the battleship Potemkin and the massacre that ensued. But perhaps the most celebrated aspect of the film was its introduction of rhythmic editing or "montage".

It is, of course, silent with added musical soundtrack, but remains evocative after all these years.
