Even if you're not sixteen, gay, and growing up in Basingstoke, there is plenty to identify with in this witty, and often moving rites of passage film.

Steven Carter, played by Ben Silverstone, is happy being gay, but not so happy about keeping it a secret from everyone except his neighbour and friend, Linda.

Then he falls for school golden boy John Dixon (Brad Gorton) and all the normal and expected angst-ridden scenarios associated with teenage hormonal drives kick in, as well as a few more uncommon ones.

There is plenty of observational humour in this film; the situations are recognisable, and we cringe and snigger in turn at the slapstick and farce that passes for life. The course of true love never runs smoothly, after all.

Misunderstandings abound, and if the script is perhaps a little heavy on the double entendres, it does serve to reflect the way minds work at that age: the uncertainty, the confusion, and the overwhelming sexual urges. And as a background to all the teen turmoil, the town with no distinguishing features mirrors the normality and anonymity that it would seem we are destined to strive for.

No real surprises here, and perhaps a trifle over-long, but nonetheless Get Real is a charming movie.
