I remember seeing this when I was a teenager. I was blown away and it wasn't just what I was smoking. This is an utterly mesmerising film that makes fantastic use of Philip Glass's minimalist sound-track against a backdrop of some of the most luscious imagery from around the world. Reggio's photography is exquisite even when showing manmade damage, and verges on visionary (remember this was filmed in the early Eighties before the arrival of the pentium) with its famous montages of silicon chip close-ups and city grids. This is the film that defined time lapse photography: urban mankind reduced to an anthill. The title is Hopi Indian for "life out-of-balance".
