FILMED in Cuba, "Life Is To Whistle" is about the quest for happiness in Havana in the year 2000. Narrated by 18-year-old Bee we follow the lives of three denizens of La Habana: Marianna, the promiscuous dancer who makes a pact with God, swearing to a life of celibacy in exchange for the lead in a ballet; mixed race Elpidio, abandoned at birth by his mother and living with the need to find her; and finally Julia, an honest woman who does good to others, but who suffers from an illness that causes her to faint when she hears the word "sex".
The background of superstition and religion helps to create a dream-like atmosphere and it is never certain whether we are watching reality or not. Narrator Bebe watches over the characters, sometimes like a Guardian Angel, and at other times like a loving teenager.
There are some genuinely funny moments such as when Julia runs through the streets of Havana shouting words that trigger fainting fits in people that hear them. Thoughtfully filmed, each scene is like watching strokes from a brush on a surreal canvas.
