The set up of this "mispokhe"(family), all glittery gold and fake tans, is appealing to begin with and the interplay between the bitchy relatives quite funny. Yet, I feel the collaborative process, in which the script was developed, missed a good opportunity to really sock it to us.

It sets it's stall out early and might well have been called My Big Fat London Jewish Wedding, but the laughs seem to dry up towards the middle. Here, poor Suzie (Summer Phoenix) suffers an identity crisis and debates her Jewish sensibilities over the appeal of her bit-of-rough, Darren (Leo Gregory).

It's a simple enough story, with Suzie examining her own love life, as the plans for her sister's wedding go into overdrive. Does she toe the party line and marry a good Jewish boy, like Anthony Silver (Iddo Goldberg), or follow her heart and elope with Darren?

This is all well and good, but the frighteningly dull chemistry between the two leads lacks sincerity and we are left wondering what all the fuss is about. Anthony might be a typical Jewish "macher" (big shot), but Darren is positively wet behind the ears, and I just don't get the attraction when he eschews such nuggets of wisdom as, "Just follow your heart, babe". C'mon!

However, a fine ensemble cast, which includes Miriam Karlin, Frances Barber and Stanley Townsend, as Suzie's dad, make the most of what they are given, although Suzie's mum (Rebecca Front) is ingratiating at times and her overplayed neurosis not as funny as it might have been. Still, for the most part, they manage to pervade a sweetness and gentle humour throughout.

Perhaps, the best feature of the film is the slick production values and sumptuous set designs, which give it the overall feel of something much more grandiose and expensive than its modest budget would suggest.
