About me

Film correspondent, and latterly cinema editor, of The Scotsman newspaper in Edinburgh for ten years before becoming a full-time freelance film journalist in 1997.

He writes regularly on film for The Guardian, Sunday Times, The Herald, as well as iofilm.

His books include On Location: The Film Fan's Guide to Britain and Ireland (Mainstream, 1995) Mel Gibson and His Movies (Bloomsbury 1996) and Ewan McGregor (Orion, 1998, 1999) and The Legend of the Planet of the Apes.

The latter reveals for the first time how John Wayne was considered for the Heston role and uncovers the truth about how Edward G Robinson was sacked from the film after his secret screen test as Zaius served its purpose and persuaded Fox to put up the money for the film.
